Recommendations for the care of a Maine Coon kitten.
The first thing to take care of is preparing the litter box. Back home, put your Maine Coon kitten in the litter box! On the first day of your stay, it is recommended that you restrict your kitten's movement around the house to a specific area, including the toilet, bowls of food, and water. If the kitten does not immediately go to the tray, periodically put it there, remembering where the "place" is.
Littering tray - the bigger the better for the Maine Coon.
I really like the litter tray - at Ferplast Max Bella (Cabrio). For those who like to bury "their affairs" thoroughly, the Maine Coon will not be able to scatter the filler during intensive work of the paw. Leave the door open first, then it's up to you (usually the cat opens it by itself). The recommended size of the tray at home is 50 * 65.5 * 47. Choose the shape, size and design of the tray, taking into account the characteristics of your home.
Filler. We use ECO PREMIUM filler. You can experiment with types of fillers, there are a lot of them now.
What to feed? -We feed dry food AWARD
You can pamper Maine Coon with beef, chicken, turkey. Whichever fresh meat you choose, it should be lean. Divide fresh meat into portions of 25-50 gr. And freeze for at least 3 days. Frost kills parasites and harmful bacteria that may be present in fresh meat. Before giving frozen meat to a kitten, be sure to defrost it completely and let it warm up to room temperature. Meat is a delicacy!
The ideal dish is a tray of bowls. The water bowl is wider and deeper than the food bowl (ceramic is better). Water (not less than 0.5 l) - must be fresh and always available. Maine Coons love to shovel water with their paws, and a puddle often forms around a bowl of water, as a result, the water quickly becomes polluted. Better to change more often. There is always dry food, do not add too much at once, so as not to lose the smell.
Do not try to change your pet's food, for cats the more familiar the food, the better. Changing feed is always stressful.
The transition to feed of another brand and manufacturer occurs gradually over the course of a week. Whatever new food you give your kitten, always check the condition of the stool afterwards. If an intestinal disorder begins, abandon all innovations.
Scratching posts and "ladders", preferably "complex" ones, must be purchased before the kitten is in the house!
The first days in the new home for the child, of course, will be stressful, because he will be left alone with strangers (for now) for him. Each kitten has its own character. Someone will yearn, and someone outwardly practically does not show form. In any case, the kitten's nervous system is under severe stress during this period, and you need to help the child adapt as soon as possible. It is important not to leave him alone all these days, he will get used to it faster. Therefore, it is better to plan a weekend trip with the kitten. Show the kitten where he has water and food, play with the kitten, pulling him to the place where you need to sharpen the claws. In the game, ask the kitten to sharpen its claws on the scraper prepared before arrival. Decide in advance if you will allow the kitten to climb onto the kitchen table. And don't let him do it, say "IMPOSSIBLE!" With a confident voice! And decisively leave the forbidden territory. Avoid toys with threads and rubber bands, it is deadly, intestinal obstruction may occur (Christmas "rain", the threads can become entangled in the intestines). Cats are very afraid of drafts. As with young children, chemistry is not available. Maine Coons in nature have very strong hunting instincts, do not leave windows open, mosquito nets do not help, the animal can fall out and die.
From the first weeks of the Maine Coon's stay in the house, teach him to comb, so that it becomes a familiar procedure for him. Do not try to brush the tail, otherwise it will not be fluffy. When brushing, pay attention to the panties, armpits, tummy. Cut off the nails with special scissors, cut off only the transparent part of the nail without damaging the flesh. Bathing a Maine Coon kitten as needed (once a month) is best from childhood, otherwise it can cause problems for an adult Maine Coon when bathing. The age of the first molt is about 10 months.
An anthelmintic should be done every 3 months, starting from the date of the last deworming indicated in the veterinary passport. The following vaccinations are required from the age of 1 year! It is better to be vaccinated at the clinic with imported vaccines. Give the cat an anthelminthic drug 7-10 days before vaccination.
Cats are very intelligent creatures and quickly figure out what's what.
